Celownik
the case of the one who receives
The case that answers komu? and czemu? — to whom?, to what?. It marks the receiver, the person something is done for or to, and the person an experience happens to.
Celownik is the third case in the Polish order, after mianownik and dopełniacz. Poles use it less often than the other cases, which is why its forms feel unfamiliar — and why a small, well-drilled set of rules covers almost all of it.
What the case actually does
Six jobs cover nearly everything. Learn to recognise the job and the ending usually follows.
The receiver
Someone gets something. The thing is accusative, the person is dative.
The beneficiary
An action is done for someone's sake, or at their expense.
The loser
Something is taken, lost, or happens against someone's interest.
The experiencer
The person is not the subject — the thing is. The person feels it in the dative.
The possessor in trouble
Polish says the thing happened to the person, not to the object.
The direction of an attitude
A handful of prepositions and adjectives point at a person or thing.
If you can put to or for before the person in English, and the verb is not one of the accusative verbs, Polish wants the dative. Dałem to bratu. Kupiłem to mamie.
Endings in the singular
Gender and the last consonant of the stem decide everything. There are only five endings to know.
| Type | Dative ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine — consonant stem | ‑owi | student → studentowi |
| Masculine — closed list | ‑u | pan → panu |
| Masculine in ‑a | ‑e / ‑i / ‑y | kolega → koledze |
| Neuter | ‑u | okno → oknu |
| Feminine in ‑a | ‑e / ‑i / ‑y | woda → wodzie |
| Feminine — consonant stem | ‑i / ‑y | noc → nocy |
| Feminine in ‑i / ‑y | no change | pani → pani |
| All genders — plural | ‑om | student → studentom |
Masculine: ‑owi is the rule, ‑u is the exception
PWN is explicit: masculine nouns ending in a consonant take ‑owi almost always. A small, closed list keeps ‑u. Learn that list as vocabulary — everything else is safe with ‑owi.
A few nouns accept both endings: katowi / katu, orłowi / orłu, osłowi / osłu, kwiatowi / kwiatu. The ‑owi form is never wrong and is the modern preference.
Feminine ‑a: three endings, one test
Look at the last consonant of the stem — not the last letter of the word, but what is left when the ‑a is removed.
| Stem ends in | Ending | What happens | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| b | ‑e | b → bi | ryba → rybie |
| d | ‑e | d → dzi | woda → wodzie |
| f | ‑e | f → fi | szafa → szafie |
| g | ‑e | g → dz | noga → nodze |
| k | ‑e | k → c | ręka → ręce |
| m | ‑e | m → mi | mama → mamie |
| n | ‑e | n → ni | żona → żonie |
| p | ‑e | p → pi | mapa → mapie |
| r | ‑e | r → rz | siostra → siostrze |
| s | ‑e | s → si | rasa → rasie |
| t | ‑e | t → ci | kobieta → kobiecie |
| w | ‑e | w → wi | sowa → sowie |
| z | ‑e | z → zi | koza → kozie |
| ch | ‑e | ch → sz | mucha → musze |
| ł | ‑e | ł → l | szkoła → szkole |
| l | ‑i | no change | sala → sali |
| soft: ć, ń, ś, ź, j | ‑i | no change | kuchnia → kuchni |
| hardened: c, dz | ‑y | no change | ulica → ulicy |
| hardened: cz, sz, ż, rz | ‑y | no change | plaża → plaży |
ł is hard and takes ‑e: szkoła → szkole, cegła → cegle, perła → perle. l is soft and takes ‑i: sala → sali, fala → fali, rola → roli. One stroke of the pen changes the ending.
Feminine in ‑ia: watch the syllable
When the i is a syllable of its own, the dative doubles it: ‑ia → ‑ii. When it only softens the consonant before ‑a, you get a single ‑i.
‑ia → ‑ii
soft consonant + ‑a → ‑i
Feminine with no ‑a
These take ‑i or ‑y, and the form is identical to the locative — the one place where two cases share a shape in the feminine.
Plural: one ending for everyone
This is the good news. In the plural the dative has no gender distinction at all: ‑om, every time.
| Singular | Plural nominative | Dative plural |
|---|---|---|
| student | studenci | studentom |
| kobieta | kobiety | kobietom |
| okno | okna | oknom |
| człowiek | ludzie | ludziom |
| brat | bracia | braciom |
| ksiądz | księża | księżom |
| przyjaciel | przyjaciele | przyjaciołom |
| oko | oczy | oczom |
| ucho | uszy | uszom |
| ręka | ręce | rękom |
| dziecko | dzieci | dzieciom |
| imię | imiona | imionom |
Masculine-personal plurals are no different: studentom, panom, Polakom. The dative does not copy the genitive here, even though genitive plural of masculine personal nouns ends in ‑ów.
Pronouns: long and short
This is the part that makes spoken Polish sound Polish. Most pronouns have two dative forms — a stressed one and a clitic one.
| Nominative | Long (stressed) | Short (clitic) | After a preposition |
|---|---|---|---|
| ja | mnie | mi | mnie |
| ty | tobie | ci | tobie |
| on | jemu | mu | niemu |
| ona | jej | — | niej |
| ono | jemu | mu | niemu |
| my | nam | — | nam |
| wy | wam | — | wam |
| oni / one | im | — | nim |
| siebie | sobie | — | sobie |
When to use which
Short form — the default
Unstressed, inside the sentence, after the verb.
Long form — for weight
Emphasis, contrast, coordination, and always after a preposition.
mi and ci cannot start a sentence. Mi się to podoba is wrong; say Podoba mi się to or Mnie się to podoba.
After every preposition, only the long form: ku mnie, ku tobie, ku niemu, dzięki mnie, przeciwko nim. Never ku mi or dzięki ci in that position.
When two pronouns meet, the dative comes first: Daję mu ją (I'm giving it to him), Powiem ci to, Kupię ci je. The reversed order Daję ją mu sounds wrong to a native ear.
Everything else
| Nominative | Dative | Nominative | Dative |
|---|---|---|---|
| ten | temu | kto | komu |
| ta | tej | co | czemu |
| mój | mojemu / memu | nikt | nikomu |
| twój | twojemu / twemu | nic | niczemu |
| swój | swojemu / swemu | który | któremu |
| nasz | naszemu | jaki | jakiemu |
| wasz | waszemu | czyj | czyjemu |
| sam | samemu | wszyscy | wszystkim |
jego, jej and ich as possessives do not decline: jego bratu, jej siostrze, ich dziecku.
Adjectives and numerals
Adjectives: two endings in the singular, one in the plural
| Stem | Masculine | Neuter | Feminine | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| hard: dobr‑ | dobremu | dobremu | dobrej | dobrym |
| hard: now‑ | nowemu | nowemu | nowej | nowym |
| soft: tani‑ | taniemu | taniemu | taniej | tanim |
| soft: wielk‑ | wielkiemu | wielkiemu | wielkiej | wielkim |
| comparative: lepsz‑ | lepszemu | lepszemu | lepszej | lepszym |
The feminine ‑ej is shared with the genitive and locative. The masculine and neuter ‑emu is shared with nothing else — it is a pure dative marker.
Numerals
| Numeral | Dative | Numeral | Dative |
|---|---|---|---|
| jeden | jednemu | jedenaście | jedenastu |
| dwa | dwom / dwóm | dwadzieścia | dwudziestu |
| trzy | trzem | trzydzieści | trzydziestu |
| cztery | czterem | sto | stu |
| pięć | pięciu | dwieście | dwustu |
| sześć | sześciu | tysiąc | tysiącowi |
| dziesięć | dziesięciu | milion | milionowi |
| oba | obu | dwoje | dwojgu |
Collective numerals take ‑u: dwojgu, trogu, czworgu, pięciorgu, obojgu.
Verbs that demand the dative
These are not optional. The verb decides the case, and no amount of English intuition will save you — help me is pomóż mi, not pomóż mnie.
Dative only — no direct object
Dative + a second object
| Pattern | Verbs | Example |
|---|---|---|
| dative + accusative person + thing | dać, dawać, kupić, pokazać, powiedzieć, pożyczyć, ofiarować, wręczyć, wybaczyć, poświęcić, zlecić, ułatwić, załatwić | Dałem bratu książkę. |
| dative + genitive person + thing wished, envied, refused | życzyć, gratulować, zazdrościć, zabronić, odmówić, oszczędzić, przysporzyć | Życzę ci szczęścia. |
| dative + za + accusative | dziękować, podziękować | Dziękuję ci za pomoc. |
| dative + o + locative | przypominać, przypomnieć, opowiedzieć, powiedzieć | Przypomnij mi o spotkaniu. |
| dative + na + accusative | odpowiedzieć, poskarżyć się, narzekać, skarżyć się | Odpowiedz mi na pytanie. |
| dative + do + genitive | przyznać się | Przyznał mi się do błędu. |
| dative + z + genitive | tłumaczyć się, usprawiedliwiać się | Tłumaczył mi się z opóźnienia. |
pomagać komu (dative) but przepraszać kogo (accusative). dziękować komu (dative) but podziwiać kogo (accusative). słuchać kogo/czego (genitive) but przysłuchiwać się komu (dative). ufać komu (dative) but wierzyć w kogo (accusative).
The contrast table worth memorising
| Dative | Accusative | Genitive | Instrumental |
|---|---|---|---|
| pomagać komu | przepraszać kogo | słuchać kogo | kierować czym |
| ufać komu | lubić kogo | szukać kogo | interesować się czym |
| wierzyć komu | podziwiać kogo | potrzebować czego | zajmować się czym |
| służyć komu | widzieć kogo | bronić kogo | posługiwać się czym |
| przyglądać się komu | oglądać kogo | nienawidzić kogo | chwalić się czym |
Prepositions that take the dative
Short list, high yield. Note the one trap at the bottom — it catches almost everyone.
| Preposition | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ku | ku morzu, ku mnie, ku górze | towards (bookish) |
| dzięki | dzięki tobie, dzięki nim | thanks to |
| wbrew | wbrew pozorom, wbrew przepisom | contrary to |
| przeciw | przeciw wiatrowi | against |
| przeciwko | przeciwko nim | against |
| naprzeciw | naprzeciw szkole | opposite, facing |
| gwoli | gwoli prawdzie | for the sake of (archaic) |
| na przekór | na przekór losowi | in defiance of |
| na złość | na złość jej | to spite |
These two look like twins and take different cases. naprzeciw + dative: naprzeciw szkole. naprzeciwko + genitive: naprzeciwko szkoły. Saying naprzeciwko szkole is the classic mistake.
mimo, pomimo, według, wedle, podług, wobec, dla and do all take the genitive. Według mnie — not według mi.
Special uses you will hear daily
Impersonal dative — the person as experiencer
Polish often puts the feeling in an adverb and the person in the dative. There is no subject at all.
Verbs with się that put the person in the dative
The grammatical subject is the thing; the person is the recipient of the experience. This is where English word order fails completely.
| Polish | Literally | English |
|---|---|---|
| Podoba mi się Kraków. | Kraków pleases to me. | I like Kraków. |
| Śniło mi się morze. | The sea dreamt to me. | I dreamt about the sea. |
| Udało mi się. | It succeeded to me. | I managed it. |
| Nie chce mi się. | It doesn't want to me. | I can't be bothered. |
| Wydaje mi się. | It seems to me. | It seems to me. |
| Przyszło mi do głowy. | It came to my head. | It occurred to me. |
| Nie mieści mi się w głowie. | It doesn't fit in my head. | I can't get my head around it. |
Dative of loss — the Polish way of saying "my"
Instead of "my wallet disappeared", Polish says the wallet disappeared on me. The dative marks the person affected.
Ethical dative — pure attitude
A pronoun that adds no information, only involvement, impatience, or affection. Very colloquial, very Polish.
Adjectives that point at someone
These take a dative complement instead of do + genitive.
podobny takes do + genitive, not the dative: podobny do ojca. But bliski does take the dative: bliski ojcu.
Nouns and verbal nouns
Verbal nouns in ‑anie, ‑enie, ‑cie keep the verb's dative. Their non-verbal cousins often switch to dla + genitive — a genuine stylistic difference, noted by PWN.
| Verbal noun + dative | Plain noun + dla + genitive |
|---|---|
| pomaganie ubogim | pomoc dla ubogich |
| służenie krajowi | służba dla kraju |
| odpowiadanie komuś | odpowiedź dla kogoś |
Other nouns that take a dative complement: hołd komuś, cześć komuś, wierność komuś, posłuszeństwo komuś, oddanie komuś.

1. Ask komu? czemu? — if the answer is a person receiving, you are in the dative. 2. Find the gender and the last stem consonant. 3. Apply the ending: ‑owi / ‑u / ‑e / ‑i / ‑y in the singular, ‑om in the plural. 4. If it is a pronoun, decide short or long — and never put the short one first.
